Concept
Human beings are the creators of modern world. We cultivate, collect, manufacture, exchange, use, and destroy materials on the earth, as we are the only rulers. We understand this world in human perspective, as we are the only thinkers. Everything, or every single data, when it is processed by human brains, becomes “humanly understandable” to us. A commonly recognized “subjective” world as Immanuel Kant described is created. Therefore, I am interested in viewing and exaggerating this non-objective connection between human beings and environment, especially within material and daily objects.

This futuristic furniture is my first step to examine how a strong connection between human and object is created and becomes visible. This humanized auto walking robotic stool keeps escaping away from everything approaching and surrounding it, which makes this stool become un-seat-able for people. As a product of human rationality, it not only has a shape made by human hands and crafts, but also has “humanized” characteristics, such as eye-like sonar sensors, organic shaped legs that give “life” to it. The contradictory function or behavior of this stool, however, is programmed into an opposition to human reasons, and leads to a more critical reflection on its unique existence, especially in this mass-production era.

A chain on the neck of stool forces this robotic furniture to be bond by its creator. However, it also constrains its owner both physically and psychologically, as the chain refers to human’s desires to rule, to control, and to dominate. Therefore, it critiques modern consumerism influence and materialism in general in our daily life.
